I Was a Finalist in the WBUR Search for the Next Great Comedy Podcast Competition

Aight.

Here it is.

Been sitting on it for a year.

Me: sitting on it.

Some of you know I entered NPR’s WBUR “Search for the Next Great Show” competition in 2018.

Some of you know 300 people submitted ideas.

I was one of them.

Some of you know 30 people advanced to semifinals.

Yo! I was one of them.

Some of you know 4 people advanced to finals.

Yo! I was one of them.

Real spit, I was geeked that the producers of Car Talk thought Yo! No Hablo merited consideration. I’ve always appreciated the witty banter and informed guidance the show provided. Even more, knowing that the guys could use their MIT brilliance in a way that allowed people to laugh and learn really resonated with me. RIP TOM. Click and Clack p/v.

The competition had judges. Really judgmental judges. ?

I lost.

The application process required us to craft a 10 minute sample of the show, and I couldn’t have done it without Ernesto Arce Donald Quintana Abel Salas & Jimmy Quintana talent.

These are those 10 minutes.

Rough around the edges, yes. But it’s a proof of concept and rough draft.

Here’s the One Sheet:

I’m sorry but what part of “Yo no hablocho espandito” don’t you understand?

Yes, I’m Latino or Latinx or Mexican American or Brown. But as a 3rd generation English-only American-Mexican, I have more questions than answers about many curious and comedic Hispanic cultural phenomena.

What’s up with the pinata, bruh?

Why do Mexicans always ‘mad dog?’

Why TWO tortillas in a street taco? The PEOPLE have questions. The answers will be provided by a mix of both real & faux-experts.

An interview w the real author of “Pinata USA” will be followed by an interview w faux Professor of Chicano Anthropology on a Marxist theory of pinata proliferation.

What’s real? What’s fake? I dont know. Remember, Yo! No Hablo.

Here’s A Little Story / I’d Like To Tell/ About One Bad Brother You Know So Well

It started way back in history about 2 thousand and 2 or 2 thousand and 3.

I crowdfunded a plane trip to NYC to participate in an MTV hosted Rocafella Records rap battle.

I rolled with Michael Parham.

I ran into Foundation Funkollective bredren Bryan Burger GrayChris Carpenter (Seefor Yourself) and Okie Doke while out there. Also met Ekundayo MountenLiun Donegan on that trip.

The battle never took place because of a riot that happened while standing in line but the experience did land me my first television job when Carlos Caro interviewed me about my experience for a fledgling new network.

He read about my exploits inAbelardo de la Peña Jr. Latino LA newsletter where I placed an ad in the classified asking for donations to fund my trip—on some pre-Go Fund me shit.

Two weeks after I came back from the NYC battle that never happened, I saw an ad in Latino LA looking for a writer for new cable network catering to English speaking Latinos, Mun2.

The guy who interviewed me for the show then interviewed me for the job. I got it. Big ups Carlos Caro.
